Feline coronavirus is a common disease that affects many individuals. Usually, the disease is asymptomatic, so cat owners may not even notice that their pet is sick. The virus can cause mild diarrhoea or vomiting. It is transmitted by the faecal-oral route. Cats begin to excrete the virus within the first week of infection, and this continues for weeks or even months. It is recommended to clean and disinfect the litter box frequently and to keep the litter box away from the bowls with food or drink.
In a small number of cases, feline coronavirus virus causes fever, weight loss and noticeable anorexia, which are the first symptoms of feline infectious peritonitis, commonly known as FIP.
